What’s At The Market This Week- July 30, 2014

Out with the old & ready for the new. That’s what’s been going on this week. The corn crop is on it’s last leg so we have begin taking it out with anticipation of planting our fall crops. We still have right much coming in and the blueberries are going wild. We thought it was going to be a slack year and then the rains came.

That’s our feature this week….Juicy blueberries ! No we can’t compete with the big grocery stores on price ! But then again we don’t try too. Ours are pesticide free, hand picked and you know where they come from.

So this week at the Montgomery Co. Farmers Market in Troy we will have lots of blueberries ! We love the homemade blueberry biscuits and that’s what our samples will be at the market this week. Along with the berries we will have…….Green beans, peas, (green, red & yellow tomatoes) more of the sweet salad tomatoes.  Cucumbers, okra, Sweet pepper (green-yellow) hot banana pepper, cayenne pepper, jalapeno pepper,  yellow squash & zucchini squash (yellow & green), butternut squash, Red candy onions  and what ever else pops up.

Hope to see you at the market !

What’s At The Market This Week- July 23, 2014

Well the 1.5″ of rain we got Monday and the showers on Tuesday have set things on fire here. The peas are blooming again, the beans are growing like wild and we are going to have some of the prettiest tomatoes of the season this week.

It just amazes me how much different rain from above makes in such a short amount of time. Life is good at White Oak Farm NC since the rain !

Short and sweet this week. We will be at the Stanley County Farmers Market on Wednesday morning 8 a.m. to 12 noon and the Montgomery Co. Farmers Market on Thursday afternoon, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. No market for us this Saturday as it is one of our scheduled off days and they come far and few between.

This week at the markets we will have-   Red & Green tomatoes, squash- Yellow & zucchini , cucumbers, sweet pepper, New red potatoes and White Kennebec potatoes, Green-beans, peas, Candy onions (white & red), banana peppers, cayenne peppers, jalapeno peppers, egg plants and Yellow low acid tomatoes.

If you get a chance stop in and see all the vendors. We appreciate your continued support !

What’s At The Market This Week- July 16, 2014

Well we finally got that much needed rain. After 40 days of pumping and hauling water we can finally breath a little easier now. Hopefully we can save the last half of our season.

Our sweet potato crop (vines) are looking good and we have a Mid August dig date already scheduled. So the last week of August or First week of September we hope to have our Sweets ready for market.

This week we will have the first of our Yellow tomatoes. The Carolina Gold is a low acid firm tomato that taste as good as it looks. So if you need a low acid tomato this one may be for you. Along with them we will have our red & green Mountain Spring tomatoes, Our heirloom Arkansas Traveler tomatoes, squash- Yellow & zucchini along with the first of the butternuts , cucumbers, sweet pepper, New red potatoes and White Kennebec potatoes, Candy onions (white & red), banana peppers, cayenne peppers, jalapeno peppers and what ever else is ready.

Hope to see you at the market !

What’s At The Market This Week- July 9, 2014

Where do we start ?……..It’s DRY ! Several years ago we added a rain catchment system for our own personal garden. This system has worked good for us until we expanded and started market gardening. Now with the drought that we are in, not so much.

Over the last 30 days we have been pulling out of the pond for irrigation. Now we are to the point that we have to stop so we don’t endanger low levels of oxygen to the fish. It normally takes us around 1000 gallons of water every other day just to sustain things. It’s beginning to show in the plants though so we have moved to hauling water from town. We hope that this don’t last long and we get rain !

This week at the markets we will have  Red & Green tomatoes, squash- Yellow & zucchini , cucumbers, sweet pepper, New red potatoes and White Kennebec potatoes, Green-beans, Candy onions (white & red), banana peppers, cayenne peppers, jalapeno peppers and what ever else is ready.

With the drought we are running behind (as usual) getting ready for the fall crops. Yep it’s that time for seedlings for an August planting. Some of our late crops this year are going to be pumpkins, late cantaloupe and late watermelons. These things we enjoy late as much as we do early. So if the rains come we should have plenty.

What’s At The Market This Week- June 25, 2014

What did we say last week ? It ALL COMES AT ONE TIME……. And it is a true statement. Red potatoes, white potatoes, green-beans, tomatoes, peppers, squash of every variety, cucumbers, purple hull-pink eye peas and even a few blue berries !! …….Oh my as my grandson would say !

We eat good here on the farm and so do our customers. It gives us reason to keep on keeping on. So this week we will tackle 2 maybe 3 markets depending on the rain. Irrigation from the pond is great and sustainable but nothing beats rain from above.

We will be at the Stanley Co.Farmers Market in downtown  Albemarle on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and the Montgomery Co Farmers Market on Thursday  in downtown Troy from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m..

We hope you can make one of the markets, but if not you can always email us at- sales@whiteoakfarmnc.com and we will do our best to get it to you.

When it starts it really starts……..everything coming off at the same time. The tomatoes are really doing great. Onions are ready to dig as are the red potatoes. We are already picking green-beans and the blueberries are starting but will be at least another week before we have any for market.

We have pulled all the squash & cucumbers out of the high tunnel, composted the soil and planted a late row of tomatoes. With the heat we are getting out early and knocking off mid day. Hopefully we will get some rain soon.

This week at the Montgomery Co Farmers Market we will have- Red & Green tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, beets, onions, green beans, swiss chard and red potatoes. Hope you are able to come out and support the market. If there’s ever a time that your not able to make the market or your running late just email us at sales@whiteoakfarmnc.com and we will try our best to get it to you.

What’s At The Market This Week- May 28, 2014

This weeks forecast is more thundershowers ! Let’s hope they hold off until after the market is over, however we do need the rain. It really makes it hard for row crop farmers coming to the market though. It takes hours to pick and package our produce and then if it’s a wash out we have to make other arrangements be it another market or load up our friends with fresh veggies.

Dad use to say “One Day At A Time Son, One Day At A Time” So If the creek don’t rise and the lightning holds off we will Be at the Montgomery Farmers Market as usual this Thursday from 3:30-6:30.

This week we will have some more of the early sugar peas, onions, swiss chard, mustard, cabbage, radishes, squash and cucumbers.

The tomatoes are just beginning to get ripe in the high tunnel but will be at least another week before they will be ready for market. I guess we will sample them in our salads this coming week.
